not use words that would have most people reaching for a
dictionary
unless of course they are of a medical or technical nature.
2. Avoid
hyperbole (intentional exaggeration.)
3. Do not
use street or slang words.
4. Do not
overuse commas.
5. Do not
give distances to or from unless relevant, e.g. a traveler might
find it
helpful to know the distance from an airport to a city centre.
6. Avoid
being too exact with such information, state an approximate figure.
7. Do not give
population figures of towns or cities unless that information is
relevant to
the brief and would be useful to the reader.
8. Do not name
individual establishments such as bars, hotels, etc unless
specifically
asked to do so.
9. Don’t guess
at anything. If you can’t substantiate information do not use
it.
Sentence Construction
This section
is mainly for less experienced writers who need to understand how to
put words
together to make exciting and informative pieces. However, you could
still find
it refreshing if you are already an expert writer.
Sentences
are the natural way to express our thoughts in writing. We speak in
sentences
verbally expressing our thoughts to a listener without really thinking
about what
we are doing.
Every
sentence must have a subject (who or what) and will always start with a
capital
letter and conclude with a full stop, question or exclamation mark. A
sentence
must stand alone in that it makes complete sense. If you imagine being
approached
by another person in the street who says to you, “Don’t go that way,
the street
has been closed off due to a burst water main,” you will understand
immediately
what is meant as the sentence is complete. If the person simply said,
“Burst water
main,” this isn’t much help to you as the sentence is incomplete and
the full
message is not conveyed. This might seem very basic but good sentence
construction
is vital to allow the reader to understand exactly what the message is.
Paragraphing
When a group
of sentences about a subject have been written they should be
combined
together to form a paragraph; correct paragraphing is important as it
helps makes
sense of what is written. A paragraph is best defined as a section of a
piece of writing that deals with a single aspect of the
whole subject.
